Electrolysis is the only permanent method of hair removal recognised by the FDA. It works by inserting a very fine sterile probe into the natural opening of the hair follicle and applying a small electrical current to permanently destroy the hair growing cells. Destruction of the follicle will be caused by heat (if using diathermy) or a chemical reaction (if using galvanic or blend).
Electrolysis can safely and effectively treat all skin tones and hair colours, including blonde, red grey and white hairs that laser hair removal cannot effectively treat.
At DermaNurse Clinic, treatments are carried out by a Registered Nurse in a professional, confidenital and hygienic environment using sterile, single use probes.
What areas can be treated?
Electrolysis can be performed almost anywhere unwanted hair grows including face, chin, upper lip, jaw, neck, eyebrows, abdomen, bikini line, underarms, breasts, hands and toes.
A consultation will determine whether the area is suitable for treatment.
Does electrolysis hurt?
Most clients describe the sensation as a brief heat or pinprick. Comfort levels vary depending on the treatment area and individual pain tolerance.
Treatment settings are adjusted to provide effective treatment while maintaining your comfort.
How many treatments will I need?
Hair grows in different cycles, meaning multiple treatments are required to permanently remove all hairs.
The number of sessions varies depending on factors such as hair colour, hair thickness, hormonal influences, previous hair removal methods and treatment areas.
Your treatment plan will be discussed during your consultation.
Is electrolysis permanent?
Yes.
Once a hair follicle has been successfully treated and permanently destroyed, that follicle cannot produce another hair.
However, dormant follicles may become active overtime due to hormonal changes or other factors, which is why several treatment sessions are usually required.
Preparation for electrolysis treatments:
If you are removing the hair by methods such as plucking, shaving, threading, waxing, epilating – please stop. Trim the area to manage growth but ensure that you grow the hair to just under 0.5cm for every appointment. You may keep hair short inbetween treatments.
